australis hoya plants

Hoyas are a tried-and-true houseplant with an almost cult-like following, and for good reason. These semi-succulents are easy to maintain, come in all shapes and sizes, and a lot of cultivars can bloom indoors. If you are new to Hoyas or looking to expand your collection, here are some stunning and lovely Hoya plants worth picking up.

Hoya australis

The Hoya australis is a skilled climber that also looks charming in a hanging basket. The versatile plant styling options make this beauty an excellent addition to any space. The thin vines feature thick, green, oval-shaped leaves that come to a point and have a waxy appearance. The Hoya australis is a vigorous grower by Hoya standards, so give it a home in a sunny spot and watch it thrive. Sweet-scented clusters of star-shaped flowers make this easy-care houseplant even more appealing.

Check out the variegated version, the Hoya australis Lisa, for a splash of color. Feature these plants nearby or in the same container for a beautiful pairing that introduces effortless style.

linearis hoya plants

Hoya linearis

The Hoya linearis is unforgettable, mainly due to its unique good looks. The linearis is a good pick if you’re into foliage. The long, reaching vines are covered in thin, needle-like leaves. Both the vines and the leaves feature delicate hair-like structures that give the plant a feathery appearance and add even more texture. Like many other Hoya plants, the Hoya linearis blooms under the right conditions. Star-shaped flowers have a waxy look and grow in clusters.

While this plant is easy to maintain, plan to water a linearis more often because this variety has increased water needs than many other Hoya plants. Hoyas are semi-succulents and store water in their leaves, and the thin foliage of the linearis cannot hold as much water as other Hoya plants. Feel the soil or use a moisture meter to determine the best time to water.

The linearis is somewhat rare, so visit your local plant store to pick up one of these charmers.

Hoya retusa

Thin foliage is also the hallmark of the Hoya retusa, but this plant does things a bit differently. Long, narrow leaves grow in clusters, giving the reaching vines a dense and somewhat chaotic appearance. The leaves are thin but so prolific that a mature plant is very full. The Hoya retusa blooms, but even when flowering, it does its own thing because it boasts individual flowers instead of clusters of blossoms. The single flowers have a glossy appearance, dark corona, and sweet fragrance. The retusa requires the same type of care as other Hoya plants.

carnosa compacta hoya plant

Hoya carnosa ‘compacta’ (Hindu Rope)

The Hoya carnosa ‘compacta’ is also a contender for Hoya plants with the most unique foliage. There are many varieties of Hoya carnosa, but the compacta stands apart. Also known as the Hindu Rope, the plant has sturdy vines covered in leaves that bend along the midrib and curl back. The thick, waxy leaves are dense and almost conceal the vine, giving the tendrils a full appearance.

Hindu Rope Hoyas are easy to maintain and thrive with basic Hoya care. Keep up with routine cleaning because the twisty foliage can easily collect dust.

Hoya Krimson Princess

The Krimson Princess is a type of Hoya carnosa, but the variegation sets it apart. The Hoya carnosa ‘Krimson Princess’ has dark red stems dotted with lush variegated foliage in creamy white and pink hues surrounded by dark green borders. Variegation is always stunning, but for some reason, pink variegation is even more lovely. The Krimson Princess and the Krimson Queen, for that matter, both deliver pink variegation.

Collectable Hoya Plants

You can’t go wrong adding Hoyas to your houseplant collection, but these options are a good starting point if you want something extra stunning or unique. Hoya plant care is relatively easy, making these semi-succulents a good pick for beginners or anyone who wants greenery without a big commitment. The diversity of appearance, foliage variegation, and growth habits make all these Hoya plants a welcome addition to any space.
