Bunny Ears Cactus Care

The Bunny Ears Cactus has one of the most darling names in the houseplant realm. This charming desert native is also one of the easiest houseplants to maintain. Get the rundown on this member of the Cactaceae family and find out what you need to know about Bunny Ears Cactus care.

Plant Basics

Opuntia microdasys is a variety of prickly pear cactus native to desert regions of central to northern Mexico and can even be found in Arizona. Plants in nature can grow several feet tall and wide and have a creeping growth habit, but houseplants are generally contained by their pot.

This perennial succulent has rounded, segmented stems that grow in an upright and branching form. The flat stem sections are known as pads and are light to medium green in color. The pads do not have the long, sharp spines often associated with desert cacti but rather have tiny barbs known as glochids. These white, golden yellow, or reddish feathery barbs easily detach from the plant and can cause injury, so carefully handle the cactus. Glochids serve a purpose and help the plant collect dew in its native habitat, keeping the cactus hydrated in an arid climate.

Pads often grow in pairs, earning the plant the bunny ears nickname. Opuntia microdasys is also known as Polka-Dot Cactus because of the appearance of the glochids.

Bunny Ears Cactus Care Requirements

Position the Opuntia microdasys in a sunny spot, preferably near a south-facing window. Bunny Ears Cactus thrive in bright sunlight. These plants can handle direct sunlight with time. Place a new plant in indirect sunlight to be safe, and slowly acclimate to direct sunlight. This cactus does best in at least six hours of daylight. The Bunny Ears Cactus may need a boost from a grow light in the winter to keep it looking its best.

Let the potting mix dry before watering the Bunny Ears Cactus. Expect to water every two to three weeks during the spring and summer and four to six weeks in the fall and winter. This plant is a succulent and stores water in its fleshy stems. Watering before the plant has worked through its reserve is damaging and can cause root rot. Drainage is essential, so ensure the plant is in a container with holes so excess water can drain. Use a potting mix intended for cacti or succulents.

Temperature and Humidity for Bunny Ears Cactus

Expect the best results when this cactus is grown in low humidity, although it can handle average humidity. Avoid increased humidity, which can harm the plant. Average room temperature is entirely comfortable, and this cactus can handle cooler temperatures in the 50° to 65° F range in the winter. Cooler winter temperatures are not mandatory for Bunny Ears Cactus care but increase the odds of the plant setting flowers.

Does Bunny Ears Cactus Bloom?

This charming cactus blooms. Thick pinkish buds unfurl to reveal bowl-shaped flowers in the spring. The buttery yellow flowers have tissue-paper-thin petals that overlap for a lush appearance. The blooms can measure two inches long and last for a few days. Plants can bloom several times during the spring. Houseplants seldom bloom, but you can increase the odds of an indoor blooming by providing the best care possible.

Bunny Ears Cactus Fertilizer

Cacti are conditioned to thrive in not-so-great conditions, so fertilizing isn’t necessary, but it can set your houseplant up for success. Apply a fertilizer intended for cacti every four weeks during the spring and summer. Check the instructions on the label to avoid over-fertilizing, and when in doubt, remember that less is more. Fertilize plants when they are actively growing.

Pruning Opuntia microdasys Cactus

Opuntia microdasys seldom need pruning but remove dead or damaged growth as it appears. Otherwise, you can put the pruning shears down.

When to Repot Bunny Ears Cactus

Bunny Ears Cactus are slow-growing, so repot every two to three years.  Upgrade to a larger pot as needed and make sure the new container has drainage holes. Wear thick gloves when handling this cactus.

Bunny Ears Cactus Propagation

Propagate the Bunny Ears Cactus by gently breaking off one of the stem segments or pads. Always wear thick work gloves to protect your hands from the pointy barbs when handling the plant. Place the pad on a flat surface and wait a few days for the cut end to callous. Plant in a well-drained potting mix and minimally water. Roots should form in six to eight weeks. This plant naturally spreads, so you may want to divide a mature plant when repotting.

Is Opuntia microdasys Pet Friendly?

The good news is that Opuntia microdasys or Bunny Ears Cactus are not toxic, so they’re kid- and pet-friendly in that regard. The sharp points of the glochids are potentially harmful, so these are not the best houseplants for homes with curious little ones and pets.
