How to Select a Spot for a Living Wall

Living walls are an eye-catching way to introduce color and texture into an indoor space and surround yourself with houseplants. Adding this feature, also known as green walls or vertical gardens, can completely change the look and feel of the space. Choosing the right spot is essential for your green wall to thrive. Here’s what to consider to select the best spot for your living wall.

Visibility and Function

Choose a spot where the living wall will be both functional and visible. Vertical gardens can define spaces, create privacy, or reduce noise. Entryways or living rooms can become focal points with a vibrant wall of greenery. In offices, living walls can boost mood and productivity and make an excellent backdrop for video calls.

Account for Size and Scale

Leave some room for the plants to grow and plan for what the installation will become, but make sure the size of your living wall works with the space. A massive vertical garden in a small room may feel overwhelming, while a tiny setup in a large space could get lost. Measure the space and plan your layout accordingly. Consider framing the wall or adding lighting to enhance its appearance.

Assess the Light Conditions

Light is one of the most important factors for plant growth. Before installing a living wall, observe how much natural light the potential location receives throughout the day.

  • Bright, direct light is ideal for sun-loving plants like succulents.
  • Indirect or filtered light works well for tropical plants like ferns or philodendrons.
  • Low-light areas are better suited for shade-tolerant species like pothos or peace lilies.

If there just isn’t enough natural light in the spot you really want to install your vertical garden, consider installing grow lights to supplement the lighting needs of your houseplants. Grow lights allow plants to thrive in areas that are otherwise unsuitable. There are a lot of different grow light options available, so your space doesn’t need to look like a greenhouse.

Water Access and Drainage

The way the plants are hung on the wall will determine how to water. Ideally, you should be able to comfortably and safely reach the plants to water. If watering becomes a hassle because you have to get a stepstool, then you may not keep up with it.

Make sure your setup does not leak or otherwise damage the wall. Long-term exposure to dampness can cause mold and become a significant problem. Ensure excess water has a place to go and is easy to remove. Overwatering plants is perhaps more trouble than underwatering.

Consider Structural Support

Living walls can be heavy, especially when wet. Make sure the structure can support the weight of the system, soil (if used), and plants. Felt pocket panels are often lightweight and include a vapor barrier, but are hung on a wall or suspended from the ceiling. It is crucial to ensure that any items hung are properly installed.

Evaluate Temperature and Humidity

Plants are sensitive to temperature fluctuations. Avoid placing your living wall in areas with extreme conditions that often exist near heating or cooling vents and exterior doors. High-humidity spaces like bathrooms can be ideal for moisture-loving species, but avoid materials that degrade with moisture.

Analyze Airflow and Ventilation

Good airflow prevents mold and pests while helping your plants breathe. High traffic areas will have increased airflow, but routinely running a fan in the area can prevent stagnant air. Be mindful that fans may dry out your greenery too quickly, so find a good balance of enough, but not too much, airflow.

Ongoing Care

Houseplants need routine maintenance, so consider how accessible the plants are within the setup. You want to be able to easily get in there to do simple maintenance when necessary.

Create a Thriving Living Wall

Selecting the ideal spot for your living wall involves more than just finding an empty section of wall. It requires thoughtful consideration of light, water, structure, temperature, and aesthetics. When you take the time to evaluate your space carefully, your living wall will flourish, and become a beautiful, sustainable feature that transforms your space.
